Vedran Bišić is a Croatian sculptor from the island of Rab whose work is deeply connected to the Adriatic landscape and Mediterranean heritage. He studied Fine Arts at the Faculty of Education in Rijeka and spent many years teaching art while continuously developing his own artistic practice. Alongside his educational career, he has exhibited his sculptures in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Croatia.

Wood is the foundation of his artistic expression. Rather than seeing it simply as a material, Bišić approaches it as a bearer of memory, shaped by nature, time and human history. He primarily works with local wood species, often selecting pieces that have already been transformed by the sea, weather and the passage of time. Natural cracks, knots, textures and signs of ageing are embraced as essential elements of each sculpture.

Instead of imposing a new form onto the material, Bišić allows each piece of wood to guide the creative process. His interventions are subtle and deliberate, preserving the character of the original material while revealing new meanings through clean forms and thoughtful composition. The result is a body of work that balances natural strength with artistic refinement.

A significant part of his oeuvre is the series Coki, Kunji and Gajete, inspired by the traditions, craftsmanship and maritime culture of the Croatian islands. These sculptures draw from familiar local forms and objects, transforming them into contemporary works that explore universal themes of time, identity, memory and the relationship between people and nature.

Bišić’s sculptures are defined by simplicity, authenticity and a deep respect for the material. Quiet yet expressive, they invite viewers to discover beauty in natural forms and to reflect on the enduring connection between craftsmanship, landscape and human experience.
